The work is a meditation on the “twinkling points of light” that serve as a broadening source of inspiration and explanation of the human experience. Taste
Taste was commissioned by the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Youth Orchestra. It is a musical presentation of each of the four basic human physiological tastes: bitter, sour, sweet and salty. Drawing upon the physical properties and emotional associations of each taste, this work connects the senses of taste and hearing through musical form, texture, rhythm and pitch. As each physical taste is distinct, this piece incorporates a diversity of styles among the different movements, assisting in the depiction of mood and ultimately evoking a suggestion of different musical and aesthetic “tastes.”
Four Detuned Pianos
This piece was featured as part of the Westcoast Composer Symposium. It requires three regular pianos and one piano tuned a quarter-tone lower than standard concert pitch. The instruments chosen for first three “in tune” pianos were ordered in terms of tone-quality and approximately when they were most recently tuned by a technician. The fidelity of intonation within the piece degrades as each new piano enters and the piece unfolds.
